Can someone explain what it means for a language like this to be open source?

I sort of get it for Python, means you can download the C files and mess with them.

But isn't Swift written in like Assembly?

Not necessarily. Objective C is open and available on other platforms but you still need Apple Hardware to compile for iOS. I think the biggest issue here is the Cocoa libraries and the signature process.


Ummm, you still need a Mac to do so. Just like you need Windows to make Windows apps.


You don't need Windows to make Windows apps. MingW and Wine work very fine on Linux.


I wouldn't be willing to trust that as a substitute for a real machine running the target OS.
